  1. The death toll in Nepal’s earthquake could reach 10,000, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has said, as survivors’ despair turned to anger at the government’s slow response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the country, with food, water and other essentials in desperately short supply.

“The government is doing all it can for rescue and relief on a war footing,” Koirala said in an interview with Reuters. “It is a challenge and a very difficult hour for Nepal.”

The death toll in Nepal alone rose to 5,057 on Tuesday, according to the country’s Emergency Operation Centre, which said more than 10,000 people have been injured. There are warnings the full extent of the tragedy will not be known until rescue teams have reached “flattened” villages in remote regions.

  3. We were making our way to advanced base camp on the north side of the mountain when on Saturday late morning, the earthquake struck.

We were about 6,100 metres up the north side of Mount Everest. We were trekking up the medial moraine of the East Rongbuk Glacier with mountains high on either side of us.

Then for about 30 seconds, the ground beneath us shook violently left and right, one or two foot. Immediately after the shake, we experienced avalanches, rockfalls from either side of us, the mountains on either side of us.

Two ice pinnacles cracked and fell rather spectacularly.

It would be what we mountaineers call a 'code brown' moment [accident in your pants].

Right at the start, I thought it was a glacier movement but it became quite clear after a few seconds that it was a full-on earthquake because everything around us was shaking and rattling and rolling. Avalanche and rockfalls were coming down.

It was frightening and concerning at the same time. Being on a glacier, you never know when the ground is going to open up and swallow you and you'll disappear 200ft down a glacier. That was concerning.

A BBC journalist was also among those who survived the avalanche on Mount Everest. Thomas Martienssen was at Camp One, 800m above Base Camp, when the avalanche struck.

  5. On Tuesday, hours after Nepal’s prime minister said his country was “on a war footing” and predicted the death toll from the quake could double to reach 10,000, aid from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) finally reached Gorkha, which had been cut off by landslides for three days.

Helicopters buzzed through the skies above the central district, which is close to the epicentre of the magnitude 7.8 quake, ferrying the injured to clinics and taking emergency supplies back to remote villages. Aid workers who had reached the region said entire villages had been reduced to rubble.

“In some villages, about 90% of the houses have collapsed. They’re just flattened,” said Rebecca McAteer, an American doctor. Udav Prashad Timalsina, the top official for Gorkha, warned that people were not getting food and shelter.

More than 10,000 people have been injured.
Among the dead are 18 climbers who were at Mount Everest base camp when it was hit by an avalanche triggered by the quake.

  7. Continues to increase the number of victims of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday. According to police sources the Asian country, the death toll now stands at over 4,300 and in addition there are 8,000 injured. In recent times there have been several aftershocks, which have not been of great intensity.

All bad news for the moment in Nepal. The squatter camps where people have been finding refuge suffered Sunday night the onset of rain is expected to continue for the next few hours. Thousands of people remain on the streets or in one of the fifteen camps accredited by the government in Kathmandu, just a rustic tents, for fear that the structures of their houses subside.

The onset of rain not only hinders the situation of the population but almost paralyzes the arrival of aid to Kathmandu. Indian officials confirmed on Sunday a plane with the help of the Indian Air Force was unable to leave due to the weather. i am Fernando Criado Bermejo

  8. The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal two days ago surged past 3,000 on Monday, a government official said. The desperate search for survivors from the country's worst natural disaster in more than 80 years continued. The number of people confirmed dead in Nepal stands at 3,218, said Nepalese Ministry of Home Affairs spokesman. India has reported 56 deaths, and China another 20. The death toll is expected to climb further as officials get information from the rugged countryside that makes up most of Nepal.
As day broke Monday, Nepal was still in survival mode after suffering a series of aftershocks following the huge initial quake on Saturday. The damage was everywhere. Stunned residents wandered the streets of Kathmandu, the capital city of roughly 3 million people that's now the focus of international disaster relief efforts. Kathmandu "looks like a city where buildings have been abandoned. People are hanging out in public squares and at intersections to avoid rubble from buildings.

The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas.
A national police spokesman told the BBC that 970 people had died in the quake, and that more than 1,700 had been injured. At least 539 people were killed in the Kathmandu valley, he added.
Nepali Information Minister Minendra Rijal s"We need support from the various international agencies which are more knowledgeable and equipped to handle the kind of emergency we face now," he said.

Among those wrecked was the landmark Dharahara tower, with many feared trapped in its ruins.
After the earthquake struck, frightened residents came out into the streets. Mobile phones and other communications have been disrupted.Major historic monuments in the Nepalese capital have been destroyed in the powerful earthquake, eyewitnesses and officials have said.
These include a nine-storey tower, temples and some parts of what was once a royal palace, all listed as Unesco world heritage sites.
Pictures posted on social media show some of the monuments have been reduced to rubble.

  21. A survey by KVERMP (Kathmandu Valley Earthquake Risk Management Project) in 2003/2004 warned that around 40,000 people might die and nearly 100,000 might suffer injury requiring hospital services when another earthquake measuring around 8.4 on the Richter scale (like the one in 1934) would hit the country... Still Nepal is under high risk!!!..'like' the page to write on wall and post your comment and discuss on this matter

  22. The 2015 Nepal earthquake (also referred to as the Himalayan earthquake)[7][8] occurred at 11:56 NST on 25 April with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8 or 8.1Ms[2] and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent). Its epicenter was approximately 34 km (21 mi) east-southeast of Lamjung, Nepal, and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 15 km (9.3 mi).[1]

It was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake.[9][10][11] As of 28 April 2015, more than 5,000 people were believed to have died as a result, with casualties reported in Nepal and adjoining areas of India, China, and Bangladesh. Within minutes of the earthquake,[12] the Government of India, via the Indian Armed Forces, initiated Operation Maitri (English: Operation Amity), a massive humanitarian mission with the primary objective of conducting relief and rescue operations in Nepal.[13] The Indian government also evacuated Indian and foreign citizens from Nepal.

  23. At least 3,617 people are now known to have died in a massive earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday, police say.

More than 6,500 people have been injured, according to the National Emergency Operation Centre.

Dozens of people are also reported to have been killed in neighbouring China and India.

More than 200 climbers have been rescued around Mount Everest, which was struck by deadly avalanches in the 7.8-magnitude quake.

Vast tent cities have sprung up in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, for those displaced or afraid to return to their homes as strong aftershocks continued. Thousands spent Sunday night - their second night - outside.

Officials have warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescue teams reach remote mountainous areas of western Nepal.

Initial reports suggest that many communities, especially those close to mountainsides, suffered significant quake damage.

"Villages like this are routinely affected by landslides, and it's not uncommon for entire villages of 200, 300, up to 1,000 people to be completely buried by rock falls," said Matt Darvas, spokesman for aid agency World Vision.

A man evacuated by helicopter to Pokhara, 200km from Kathmandu, said almost every home in his village of more than 1,000 houses had been destroyed, Mr Darvas told the BBC.

  25. Nepal´s earthquake killed more than 7.000 people and injured more than 14.000.

It happened on 25 April at 11:56, with a magnitude of 7.8 or 8.1.

It´s epicenter was the village of Barpak, and it´s hypocenter was approximately 15 km under ground.

This earthquake made an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19 people, which make it the deadliest day on that mountain. It also made an avalanche in Langtang valley, where 250 people were reported missing.

This earthquake also made thousands of people homeless by destroying entire villages across the entire country.

The earthquake was initially reported by the USGS (United States Geological Survey) when it´s magnitude was 7.5, before it upgraded until 7.9. The CENC (China Earthquake Networks Centre) reported the earthquake magnitude to be 8.1.

According to the USGS, the temblor was caused by a sudden thrust, or release of built-up stress.
